Pat, like you say, Tigers are far from being a basket case. They need to sign VMart and Miller is my favorite reliever in the entire free market. Why, when I look at a reliever, I count the number of bad pitches he throws per 10. I make sure I see him several times using this method. Stay away from video or replay because it only shows their best pitches. I know this is old school but it works. Classification of a bad pitch is the viewer's choice. For example, throwing a pitch in the dirt I don't classified as a bad pitch. I wish the Tigers would adopt this model because it would have prevented Soria from coming here and young guy winding up and throwing as hard as they can. Robbie Ray looks like he is throwing to the backstop. You mention K-Rod and he is in top 2nd tier for me along with O'Day if his option is not exercised. My third pick is Romo as is very effective against righties. Gregerson should be mention too.
Okay Book, let me ask you this. You just invested a year into the development of rookie manager in Ausmus. A very costly year. This year - because of the expectations - because of the talent - because of the potential that was there - it was a very heavy investment in Ausmus education.
Forget about asking instead if he should have managed this team this year in the first place - too late for that one - the price has already been paid - Tuition was expensive this year at the school of hard knocks.
So do you cut him loose? That education for nothing? Yup - he certainly didn't learn game 1's 8th inning lesson in game 2. Hell, he did it all over again.
But will he carry over anything he learned this year into next year - will he be a better manager next year because of what he learned this year? And the year after that?
That's what I'm wrestling with. Sure I'm pissed off at him - at all of them - right now. But do you simply cut your losses with Ausmus and move on? Or do you hope you can grow a Sparky Leyland?
Barry, K-Rod would help the Tigers because he can set up or close. O'Dea is a situational guy Tigers could use. Romo doesn't throw hard at all. I was shocked how much he has changed when Giants were in, but he does have competitive character. Thanks for the posts this baseball season. It will be interesting in off season. Caputo
Fred Brill, I thought Ausmus was a good manager this season until he made a very serious mistake vs. Orioles. It was, really, a no-brainer to leave Sanchez in under the circumstances. But firing somebody just to fire them, doesn't make sense. You have to have somebody who would be an upgrade. I don't see that out there. I'd bring him back. Lets put it this way, I don't see him making the same mistake twice. Also, he didn't have a balanced team. It was very flawed. They had six Triple A players on that club. No bench. Thanks for the posts this season. It was good stuff. Caputo
Pat, the Orioles O'Day is use that way but he has faced 552 left handed batters in his career and they only hit 239. I think he could handle the 7th inning with a lefty as back-up in some cases. Romo does make quality pitches but he would be looking for a closer role though. J Zumaya use to throw 100 m.p.h but he ended up with a career whip 1.35.

I don't know.
