Michigan State would be getting jobbed if Wisconsin goes to the Rose Bowl

Michigan State fans are upset, and they should be, by the prospect of Wisconsin getting the Rose
Bowl bid ahead of the Spartans. There is no way, in these situations, that a head-to-head meeting should not be the very first tiebreaker. It is just one of many maddening parts of the BCS. There remarkably little rational thinking involved with it.

Random Thoughts

- The Red Wings have so many good players that you see this constant shuffling with which one is carrying the hot hand. The last couple games, it has been Valtteri Filppula. For a couple weeks before he got banged up a bit, it was Daniel Cleary. The Red Wings success isn't just predicated by big guns like Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk. Their depth is remarkable.

- The key factor down the stretch in the NFC will be whether Atlanta is able to maintain home field advantage. The Falcons are beatable on the road. At home, it's a different story. I just don't see them losing. The schedule sets up well for the Falcons. Tampa Bay is the only quality team they must face on the road.
Wouldn't it be something if the Falcons hosted Michael Vick and the Eagles in a playoff game?

- Jiri Hudler is seeing regular time on the power play with Mike Modano injured. Maybe it will snap him out of it. He is a better player than he's displayed so far this season.

Disagree. Wisconsin should get the Rose Bowl because they are the better team. There is more than one game played in a season. Wisconsin had more quality wins than MSU did. Alot of MSU's games could've gone either way. They really did get away with one against ND. The play clock had expired on MSU on the fake punt play. That should've been a penalty. They really shouldn't have won that game. Also, the Wisc-MSU game was played at MSU so they had home field advantage. Had that game been played in Wisconsin, MSU would've lost. For once, the BCS got it right. Wisconsin is rightfully ranked higher and deserves the Rose Bowl.

Pat,

If MSU wants to go the Rose Bowl, beat a 7-5 Iowa. Or stay close to Iowa. Or win the conference title by playing OSU which MSU hasn't done since 1987. Wisky beat the reigning champion, they deserve to go. OSU is 2nd because they only lost at Wisky which is a much better loss than at Iowa.

Pat - I never knew what made up the BCS formula until now. It's just a compilation of 8 polls !! The Harris, the Coach's and the average of six other polls. The weighting is one third for each. I am gobsmacked, yup, look it up, that there is NOTHING empircal about the formula. All subjective. Ironically, the BCS uses head to head records as the first tie-breaker ! The MSU Spartans are being robbed of a Rose Bowl berth in broad daylight.

I don't see what Spartan fans are having trouble understanding: OSU, Wisc, and MSU all had one loss, each on the road. The team that beat OSU had one loss; the team that beat Wisconsin had one loss; the team that beat MSU had 5 losses. That alone justifies the other two going to see Rose ahead of MSU.

Hey Anonymous "Wisconsin had more quality wins than MSU did." Really? Wisconsin was 4 - 1 against teams making bowls this year. MSU was 7 - 1 against teams making bowls this year. Wisconsin's strenghth of schedule is ranked much lower than MSU's. MSU may not have played OSU, but Wisconsin didn't play either Illinois or Penn State.

Anonymous,
How can Wisconsin be the better team? MSU beat Badgers - and it was a decidedly.

Deano,
They both had 1 loss. And Wisconsin's was to MSU. In my opinion, that's all that should count.

Bob G,
To me, it is nonsensical to not have head-to-head meetings be the first tiebreaker.

Doug,
Oh-Kay, but what happened when MSU played Wisconsin? MSU beat Wisconsin. So how can Wisconsin be deemed "the better team" when all else is equal in standings.

Nolan,
Agreed - except beating Ohio State was a big deal. MSU didn't play Buckeyes.
