Getting Ozzie Ready For The Playoffs Might Not Be That Easy

The Red Wings don't have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to breaking Chris Osgood back into the lineup.
That's the difference from last season when the Red Wings were comfortably into the playoffs and could afford to give Osgood time to get his feet back underneath himself. Not this year. Every game counts. If Jimmy Howard gives the Red Wings a better chance to win, they must play him - period.

Random Thoughts

- Great victory by the United States over Canada in the World Junior Championships. That was a back and forth overtime thriller of the highest order. Now we'll see if it will be precursor for the Olympics. Canada will clearly be the favorite. The Canadians depth is incredible.

- The Tigers might be selling Joel Zumaya as their closer. I am not buying. Now Ryan Perry - that's a different story.

- Any local whining about Houston's Brian Cushing being named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year is unfounded. He is a way better player at this point than Lions' safety Louis Delmas. No knock intended on Delmas, but Cushing is the best defensive rookie I have seen in a long time. It didn't get that much attention because the Texans tend to fly under the radar.

My column in Wednesday's Oakland Press about why this state should really, really hate Jim Tressel http://tinyurl.com/yan2jbo

Pat, relief spells Valverde. Why hasn’t he sign with any one. There are rumors he could sign for less than he signed for last year. At that price he is a steal. He would definitely strengthen the bullpen.

Pat, IMO Zumaya has better than a 50/50 chance of going down with an injury in 2010, based on his past history. Perry, hasn't shown he has consistancy with his pitches to close THIS YEAR. Maybe he will by 2011. To expect a rookie, like Satterwhite, or Weinhardt to step in and close is rare, isn't it? I understand they are in a bind because they will be in good shape from within by 2011. But me of little faith, in Schlereth or Coke, thinks that by doing nothing to replace Rodney's saves, or Lyons vetern contributions contributions, The Tigers will be mailing it in this year. Dave

Pat,

Why worry about getting Ozzie ready for the playoffs this year? It seems pretty certain that the Wings will be a longshot chance to win the Cup this season (assuming they even make the playoffs). I'd rather let Howard continue to gain experience in the playoffs this year so that when he does become the definite #1 goalie, he will have some playoff experience in his bag. This was going to be a transition year for the Wings anyway, let's take advantage of it.

Barry,
He wants more than team are willing to pay him - and it is a classic waiting game. Tigers in mix.

Dave,
Zumaya has proven he can be depended on. Don't think Tigers are. Perry will be good. Valverde a distinct possibility - and he's pretty good.

Jeff H,
Although I do see the logic behind your opinion, I see it as unlikely. The Red Wings figure they can win the Cup this season. They just want to get in the tournament and be healthy.
