No Surprise If Culpepper Starts

It wouldn't surprise me if the Lions start Daunte Culpepper Sunday vs. Chicago. The thought "they need to find out" about Drew Stanton is something the organization determined long ago. They don't think he can play, and the Lions' actions down through the years - including this year - have spoken volumes. Stanton not playing well in San Francisco only further clinched the notion. The question remains about what the Lions should do about backup quarterback next season. I expect Culpepper and Stanton to both be gone. And don't be surprised if they draft a quarterback a little later in this draft.

Random Thoughts

- I've always thought David Lee would be a perfect fit for the Pistons. I think even more so after the way he dominated Tuesday's game for the Knicks at The Palace. He is not huge, but plays bigger than his size. The added benefit - he is exceptionally athletic.

- Losing to Toronto and New York is disappointing for the Pistons because those are the type of teams they are being measured against. So are the Bulls, up next on Thursday at The Palace.

- Prediction: The Tigers' bullpen is going to be better than many people think. I expect Ryan Perry to step forward this season, and Robbie Weinhardt to come on quickly. He pitched exceptionally well in Arizona. Not quite as sure about Cody Satterwhite, though.

- I am stunned Wisconsin manhandled Miami that way. Maybe the Big Ten will surprise this bowl season.

Note: This blog will be back on its regular 5-day per week schedule beginning Jan. 4. Hope everybody is having a great holiday. Your support is greatly appreciated. Will be writing columns from the Pistons game for Friday's Oakland Press, a column on my baseball Hall of Fame ballot for Sunday's Oakland Press and a column from the Lions' game for Monday's Oakland Press. Will post columns on blog and Twitter per usual. Happy New Year.

At this point it doesn't matter if Jason Hanson starts at QB for the lions. Its time to focus on next year already in my book. Like Schwartz said to many things can be taken wrongly in the last game of a season. Berry, Haden, Okung, and Suh, Tate Williams are names I would be thinking of right now and any top pass rushing free agents or guards available. Stanton or Culpepper who cares that is just paper work to finish the season in a very meaningless game.

As for the Pistons. I think I'd be all over that Tracy McGrady situation. Why not!!!.. Get yourself a stellar draft pick with the position of being able to sign Amare or Chris Bosh.

As for the Tigers they better have a better bullpen because tehy are going to have to shut out a lot of opponents if they are going to win cause I think runs are barely going to be extremely rare this season even more so then last year.. Unless Dumbrowski can muster up another deal or two for some offense.

I don't think the Lions should even consider drafting a QB in any round. We have so many needs on defense, on the offensive line, at WR, and even at HB now. Please Mayhew, use your picks on those positions.

There's so many solid veteran backups out there, we can easily sign one of them and sign another younger guy to be our 3rd QB (like that guy we took off waivers from the Pats).

As for the Pistons, I also think Lee would be a good fit here. If we can't get a star big he'd at least fill that need for a great rebounding big that can regularly score down low. When's the last time we had one of them?

I agree that Culpepper and Stanton will not return - intersting to see who they pick up to challenge Stafford. But everyone here knows they basically need everything but wide recievers.

All the laws of statistical analyisis and probability prove that even a group of monkees after fifty years should not only be able to write a masterpeice on a typewriter but also be able to put together a Super Bowl football team - just once. Count me among those screaming for everything defensively minded in this off season draft and free agency.

The sucess of the 2010 Tigers - as they stand now - IMHO - depend on how crappy the AL Central remains. Pitching and Bullpen can only keep the other teams run production so low - Unless Maggs somehow rebounds and the new kids step up - and Toledo continues to contribute - we finish behind the Twinkies and ChiSox.

Happy new year to you and yours Pat. Cheers.

Pat, I agree the farm is starting to produce ballplayers than previous years. I wonder what the hold is with Valverde signing somewhere. If Valverda can be sign in the FRodney range why not do it? The only drawback is you have to give up first round draft pick. I think Valverda is worth more than the 19 spot in the draft.

Anonymous,
Problem is, there is no guarantee either one of those guys would sign here. Seems more unlikely than likely.

Michael C,
If they keep Stanton for another year, as Mayhew said they will, they won't draft a QB late. But they need a better veteran backup than either Culpepper or Stanton, in my opinion.

Fred Brill,
Like you quoting the old Molson commericial about the monkeys. One of my favorites, by the way.

Barry,
Valvarde wants $10 million per year and won't get it. That could be good news for the Tigers, who seem to want him.
