Another Reason The World Baseball Classic Must Go

One of the reasons I feel the World Baseball Classic must go: If the Tigers reach the World Series and it goes to a Game 7, it will be played Nov. 5 in Detroit.
Baseball? In Detroit? On November 5? The mean temperature that day is 46. The average low is 39. The record low is 18. It is rapidly approaching winter at that point. It's not like the weather is any better in New York or Philadelphia or Boston at that time. How about Minnesota when the Twins get their outdoor park?
There is no crying in baseball - nor should there be baseball in November. Period.

- I've written it before. I'll write it again. Another statue should be added to Comerica Park. The '84 Tigers should get their due. I believe the statue should of Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell together.

- Predicting football games is an odd venture. Convoluted thinking seems to rule - at least in my mind. But here we go...
Although I think Michigan has a better team than Michigan State this season, I still believe MSU will win Saturday. Here's why: Michigan isn't as good as its 4-0 record indicates, and the Spartans not as bad as their 1-3 record suggests. Given the game is in East Lansing, Saturday will present a leveling of water.
Told you - pretzel logic.

- Anybody still want Matthew Stafford replaced as the Lions' starting quarterback?

Pat,

I wish I agreed with you about MSU winning, but when players started playing the "respect" card today, I just about knocked a hole in my TV. When you are 1 - 3, shut your mouth, play the game and earn your respect!

PatI agree, baseball season shouldn't be play in November or even late October. That is just plain stupid. The only solution I can think of is to play the World Classic in a neutral spot where it is warm. Football does it so why not baseball? Hosting Team could pay a fee to the two teams that host the World Classic.

Pat,
I don't blame the WBC for November baseball. It is the greed of the networks and MLB that foist this crazy schedule upon us. All the night playoffs games are due to Fox wanting primetime viewers. The days off are ridiculous again dictated by Fox. it is the same with basketball playoffs. All of the 4 major seasons go a month too long and are a month longer than they were 30 years ago. That's because of TV contracts not the WBC.

Absolutely the WBC is a bad thing. But you forget. Major League Baseball is not about quality baseball, it is about TV. Why else is the WS played at night in October in Philadelphia? Do you remember how nasty last year's WS was weather-wise?

On the subject of Trammell and Whittaker, did you vote for them for the HoF?

Pat,

I don't think the WBC should go away - just move it. Play it in January - in the southern hemisphere - in Asian or European tropics.

I enjoy the WBC too much to wish they do away with it. How else is a schmuck like me going to see the great asian and south american players unless they make the bigs?

But right now - lets just think of what a wonderful problem it would be if the Tigers have to worry about playing in November.

We might as well worry about where we are going to invest our powerball lottery millions while we are at it.

Driving home from the rainout game and heard the caller who wanted to remove the Willie Horton statue so to add others. Somehow I don't think he is going to make that suggestion to you again.

For what it is worth though it is a no-brainer, I agree that the Horton statue stays for all the reasons articulated.

Jeff H,
Agree with you totally on that. They need to earn the respect Saturday to get it.

Barry,
If they are going to play the WBC, certainly don't extend the season because of it. Seems like logic that wasn't followed here. Can you imagine a rainout or two for Game 6 and 7 of the World Series. They could be playing on Nov. 10 or something ridiculous like it.

Alan,
I hear you on that. The only thing worse than November baseball is night baseball in November.

Jim15302,
I always thought that it would be impossible to love baseball more than I do, but even I didn't see the WBC as great TV. Who won it anyway?

Fred Brill,
I know you like the WBC and it does speak to your power as a baseball fan. You're not alone, but I would say, Fred, you are definitely in the minority. Don't believe there would be any outrage if it were canceled.

Core Contrarian,
I knew the point the guy was trying to get at about Horton's numbers, but come on, it can't get more Detroit than Willie Horton.
