Outrage Over MSU Logo Misplaced

Reaction to two things in regard to the current state of Michigan State's athletic program are perplexing to me.
One is the outrage about the Spartans' changed logo. Honestly, it doesn't look that much different than the old one. Certainly, I don't think athletic director Mark Hollis should have his feet held to the fire about it. Nor should it be necessary for basketball coach Tom Izzo to defend him about it.
Now, as for the Nov. 22 altercation at the dorm involving MSU football players...
That is a far more important issue. And so is how Hollis is dealing with it. He did let MSU coach Mark Dantonio bring the suspended football players back to the football facility after missing only the Alamo Bowl.
It's far too soon. Doesn't seem like anything was learned from the mistake of letting Glenn Winston back onto the football team so soon after he was released from jail last summer.
And this situation is far from complete. Two more MSU players - defensive tackle Oren Wilson and wide receiver Myles White - were charged Tuesday.
Michigan State needs to grab institutional control of its athletic program. That is Hollis' responsibility. It's far more important than new logos.

My column in Tuesday's Oakland Press on why tonight's MSU-UM basketball game is sooooo much more for Michigan http://tinyurl.com/yazksum

Good point Pat - the logo issue is overblown.

I have a non-related question about the radio show (which I love) - how come you guys rarely do interviews with sports figures on the air? (i can't recall a time in recent memory in fact, and i listen daily) I just think it would be a great dynamic on the show if you had at the very least, a weekly or even bi-weekly guest on for some in-depth questions? i recognize it's a call-in show above all else, but i often wonder during lengthly segments on a certain topic why you guys don't call someone of interest related to the story (althete, analyst, mgmt, etc) -- or set up a call as a kickstart to a segment?
i also realize that there are specialty shows for each local team where some interviewing is done, and post-game interviews after broadcasts, etc - but still curious as to why it is not more of a regular thing on the main show(s).

just curious! thanks pat and keep up the great work!

Pat,

I agree that the logo change itself has been way overblown, but I have some questions about the backstory that haven't been answered yet in the news stories I've read.

Was Nike involved in the redesign?

If Nike was in fact involved in the redesign, were they paid for their services? How much were they paid?

Why pay Nike to do something that any Graphic Arts student could have done? It's not like the new logo is radically different than the old one.

I'm not alleging any wrong-doing, I'm just curious about the Nike rumor and I'm wondering; if this is true is there something bigger coming down the pike at a later date?

While the changes may not have been drastic with the new logo, they are symbolic, which is what a logo is, a symbol of your school. People have viewed that Spartan logo as a symbol of the school they love and the teams they root for. For no apparent reason, it seems like some school marketing bureaucrats and Nike have decided to change that. People don't like to be jerked with, and I think they feel that's exactly what the school is doing. The new Spartan helmet may not be much of a downgrade, but when you put the logos side by side, the new version certainly doesn't look lik ean upgrade and overall it appears garish.

dave in windsor,
Our format doesn't include except rarely. It's more about talking and having conversations with listeners.

William,
I think that's what bothers people most - a private company dictating college tradition.

John,
I hear you, but thing is, they have changed it a lot before down through the years. I remember some of those changes being more drastic, but never hearing this type of complaining about it.
