Lions Rookies Need To Get Better

The Lions reminded me of a bad hockey team Sunday. You know, one of those teams that takes off shifts. It was almost as if the Lions took off some of their possessions against the Rams. There seems to be a certain intensity their rookies lack. That's especially true of Matthew Stafford and Louis Delmas, who are both capable of standing out in the league. But not with that sort of inconsistent effort.
It was laughable how Delmas stood over and kind of taunted Steven Jackson after tackling him on one play. Jackson had schooled him all day by breaking his open field tackles and turning short runs into long ones.
Stafford was a lot of things Sunday. An inspiring leader wasn't one of them. He had one drive. And it was terrific. But that was it.

Random Thoughts

- At least the Red Wings ended their road trip out West strongly. That win Saturday at Calgary was crucial and well earned. No big comeback. Just solid hockey against one of the better teams in the Western Conference. At least the Red Wings will be at home or playing in this time zone for awhile. The Red Wings need that type of schedule stability right now. Wouldn't surprise me if they start racking up points.

- If Chris Wilcox doesn't play more and Ben Wallace less, the Pistons are headed for the bottom of the Eastern Conference faster than a bootlegger whose feet have been dipped into cement.

- Michigan's loss at Illinois has to rank as one of the worst in school history in terms of the way it has taken what had been a hopeful season and sent it down the drain. Will the Wolverines ever win on the road again? Doesn't seem like it after that performance.

- The Yankees aren't only a great team, they're a smart team. Johnny Damon's two stolen bases on one play Sunday night was only the latest example. It setup all that happened afterward because Phillies Brad Lidge stopped throwing his breaking ball with a runner on third. Brilliant.

The rookies are only part of the problem.....Rookies have come and gone and guess what, here we are again.....this team will never move forward with the existing ownership. I am a Ford person to the bone, but FOMOCO is where I make my living. Mr. Ford has never acquired the ability or nastiness to make the decisions needed to run a NFL football team. He is too loyal to his people and that is unacceptable in this cutthroat industry. He is too nice a person to run a pro football team.
That being said.....What would the ramifications be if they held a Lion's Game at Ford Field and absolutely no one showed up. Maybe fans of the other team, but not one Lions supporter. Would that get the point across? If you really care for the Lions.....maybe some tough love is in order... "

Pat,

Do you think Michigan will be better next year? They will lose their best player Brandon Graham, both Minor and Brown, and Greg Matthews their most consistent receiver. Donovan Warren may end up leaving for the NFL as well. They have major holes on their defense yet they guys stepping up are walk-ons.

Rodriguez most likely will be 1-5 against OSU, State, and ND after two years. All 3 of those teams look to be better next year and two of those games will now be on the road. I've always thought Rodriguez was a good coach but it seems like he will have an uphill battle to get through his 3rd year without being under a lot of pressure.

Their 2009 recruiting class also only has one real impact player in the estimation of most, Devin Gardner and first year QBs struggle. Even worse Michigan only has two 4 star or better defensive recruits next year for a team that really needs an infusion of talent on that side of the ball.

Clawtown Crier,
No doubt William Clay Ford has been reason No. 1 for the Lions failures down through the years. Doesn't have a clue. If they win, it will be despite him.

John,
Great points about Michigan's defense. They have some younger linemen who are doing well (Martin, Van Bergen), but don't seem to have stars in the making.

John,
I don't see how defensively Michigan will be better. Losing Graham a killer. Don't expect Warren will be back, either.
