A Little This And A Little That - Leading Off With Freddy Sanchez

Freddy Sanchez is an excellent hitter, who can play third base and help the Tigers immensely. He has an $8 million contract option for next season that kicks in if he has 635 plate appearances this year, which he will easily reach. It is not unreasonable for the first season he is eligible for free agency. He would replace Placido Polanco at second base next season. The guy did win a batting title.
The Pirates have not been asking too much for their players. Consider this: They essentially traded Nate McLouth to Atlanta for former Tigers prospect Gorkys Hernandez, who was the key prospect in the deal. Reliever John Grabow would really help the Tigers, too.

- One of the reasons Sanchez is on the block is because he publicly criticized the Pirates for the McLouth trade.

- David Weathers would fit the Tigers. Doesn’t seem like the Reds will pick up a $4 million-plus option on his contract for next season. The buyout is just $400,000. He would be an ideal addition to the Tigers bullpen. At 39, he still has pretty good "stuff." Has 13 holds this season and lots of closing experience.

- I get the feeling if Michigan is .500 or worse this coming season, there will be an groundswell to oust Rich Rodriguez he may not survive. And I’m not sure if that would be fair to Rodriguez.

- How good is Bryant Johnson? This will be a golden opportunity for him because every team is going to roll its coverages toward Calvin Johnson. If Bryant Johnson is any good, it should be like stealing candy from a baby for him.

- The Lions worked out Cleo Lemon? Just what "The Motor City" needs - a QB named Lemon. Then again, Chester worked out pretty well back in the day, didn’t he?

Pat,

I know this is off topic but i'd like to hear your thoughts on the following. I cant for the life of me understand why over the last few days (and over the last couple years) there has been such a media obsession over Michael Vick and then you hear minimal coverage about the donte stallworth case. i know vick screwed up pretty good, but the man was involved with the death of animals and spent a whole lot of time in prison. Stallworth killed another man over his irresponsible actions and he served less than 30 days in jail (24 days) and there is nothing on this subject. in reality, even if he gets a year suspension, this guy will have missed less time and lose less money than vick and you wont see teams as hesitant to sign him i'm willing to bet. leonard little, the rams linebacker committed the same act as stallworth and he went on to a long and lucrative career. this is mind boggling and on top of it, it is just insane and it makes me want to vomit.

lil rob, although an innocent human's life is obviously more important than any number of dogs, I think the descrepency in people's reactions lies in intent.

If Vick ran over a dog when driving under the influence there'd obviously be no comparison. But instead Vick was basically a complete sociopath, and was more like a serial killer of dogs, killing tons of them for little to no reason.

Lil Rob,
I agree there does seem to be a problem there, but this is why it happened that way legally. Vick denied he was involved. He lied to everybody. Stallworth cooperated with authorities. It's one of the main reasons Stallworth got off eaiser and they threw the book at Vick.

But he does have a point - human life vs. dogs. I own dogs and loves dogs, but there can be no comparison.

Pat,

Why are you so soft on Rich Rod. Michigan has 8 home games, including two MAC teams and a lower Division school, and you think pressure on him wouldn't be fair? Michigan still has the second best talent in the Big Ten. Yes, QB is inexperienced but the rest of the offense is suited fine to the spread. He needs to step it up and understand winning games is more important than proving his system works. Win 6 of 8 at home and split the 4 road games is not asking too much.

I am so sick of UM slappies whining about Rodriquez. What exactly did they expect? He brings an entirely different scheme to a historically underperforming program, and they get all in a tizzy because there is a learning curve to go through.

Helloooo!

These are amateur athlete - students. It may just take a few years to ramp up. Chill. Take a Zanax. Grow up.

Deano,
It is just second year of his program. I agree it can't be a disaster again like last season, but it is a dramatic change for the program and there will be a true freshman at QB.

Anonymous,
I'm with you to a degree, but 3-9? A home loss to an awful Toledo team? Losses to every rival, most lopsided? It can't be that big of a learning curve for long or he will be out of a job faster than anticipated.
