Iverson Deal A Gamble

Did I like the Allen Iverson deal by the Pistons? Yes, but mostly for personal reasons. Of all the NBA players, I enjoy watching him play the most.
I have always been fascinated by how hard Iverson drives to the basket, and how tough he is physically despite a frail appearance. Even at 33, Iverson has extraordinary quickness and shoots well.
I know Joe Dumars has to shake up his team at some point. But is it too radical a change? Is it too early?
Those are legimate questions to ask. It's understood Chauncey Billups has slowed down, but Iverson isn't exactly in his prime, either. The Pistons are obviously thinking of going smaller, which is the trend in the NBA, and Iverson would help pick up the tempo.
It's just the thought of Rasheed Wallace and Iverson on the same team does seem a bit disconcerting. Michael Curry will have his hands full, that's for sure.
As for freeing cap space for the future, that's good. But there is no guarantee the Pistons will be able to use it. LeBron James and Chris Bosh are going to have a lot of teams after them - including their current ones. It would be a shame if the Pistons had tons of cap space and no way to use it. That means the Iverson trade is just as much about winning now and heating up what had become waning fan interest as the future.
It's still a gamble, but one worth taking.

Random Thoughts

- I didn't like the Lions' loss Sunday, but thought the effort was there. That wasn't the case earlier in the season, which made the Lions' current plight even more upsetting. It's too late for Rod Marinelli and his staff. This is his third season and 15 losses in the last 16 games makes his recovery nearly impossible. But at least some of his message is finally getting through.

- The Tennesse Titans are a bland team offensively, but they have standouts everywhere on defense. They are a classic example of why you want to build an NFL team defense first.

Pat,

Do you think that Joe D. is focused on short term success or long term success with the Pistons? There is no way that swapping Billups for Iverson will improve this squad. I always loved the fact that since 2004 there has been no other point guard in the East that has been able to match up against Billups. Now, we have a guy who likes to shoot and drive and wants his teamates to spot up, rebound, and play defense. It may have worked in Philly for a little while, but not in Detroit. They rely on half-court, off the ball screens for Rip and Rasheed, and I dont see where AI can mesh with that.

Short term, this deal will do nothing to get the Pistons into the Finals once again. I'm sure Mr. Iverson thinks he is already Mr. Big Shot, but he will definetly have to earn his respect.

Long term, this move will definetly free up some salary so when 2010 comes along, the Pistons may be able to nab some solid big men to compliment our young backcourt.

Son of a gun things are getting interesting. Cullpepper and Iverson.

It will be odd rooting for Iverson. But I always thought Billups benefitted more from his team mates than they did from him.

It's too bad these deals couldn't have been with 4 years younger versions of both.

This sounds more like a used atheletes lot.

Oh - and congrats to you all on such a historic day. Please vote!

I am very skeptical about the Iverson deal, but it was clear Billups was becoming a defensive liability...and will only get worse. But, he was clutch offensively. Iverson is past his prime also, but maybe a little harder to contain...we shall see.

But, do you really think that Dumar's can't attract the big name free agents here Book?

OK, Lebron is going to NYC...but, most others should be game to work for Joe and a great owner in Davidson, no??

j-thug,
I think it's a little bit of both. There Pistons might be better off with Iverson than Billups this season. They certainly can use the cap space his contract creates at the end of the season. I loved the deal from the Pistons' standpoint.

Fred Brill,
Spot on Billups. But he will be going to a solid team in Denver, so there likely won't be a dropoff for him. Saw Don Cherry ranting about he was the only who believed in the Leafs. That was pretty funny.

dakota mark,
Iverson isn't much better from that standpoint, but he will make the opposing guards work hard tracking him because he is much more in perpetual motion than Billups.
