What About Not-So-Hot Rod?

The weird part about the Lions falling - again - to an incredibly bad level is we have no idea how to gauge Rod Marinelli, the head coach. Is he a good head coach? It is impossible to discern under the circumstances. The organization is an utter mess. They are neither rebuilding nor trying to win now. The Lions are in this no man’s land that inevitably leads to season after season like this one. They are not only disgusting, but provide little hope for the future. Obviously, Matt Millen needs to cleaned out. And that should just be the start for a front office that is incompetent at every level. But where does that leave Marinelli? A new GM would want his own coach. And it is not like Marinelli has not made mistakes. There have been several obvious things he has done wrong. This is not Joe Giradi and the Florida Marlins here. The Lions have not played sound fundamental football under Marinelli. Nor have they been intense.

Random thoughts

- The more I think about it, the more I want to see rematch between Michigan and Ohio State in the BCS title game.

- I love this weekend. Not only is there great college football on TV, but the high school state finals are terrific. I am looking forward to going to the Madison and Farmington Harrison games Saturday at Ford Field. Should be terrific. I will have columns on it in the print edition of The Oakland Press in the editions Sunday and Monday.

- Correct me if I am wrong, but Mike Williams did not look any worse than the Lions receivers other than Roy Williams on Thursday.

- I am against goofy protest marches and wearing the colors of the other team at Ford Field, but am convinced the “Fire Millen” chants are a necessary evil.

- This thought actually entered my mind during the Lions game Thursday: How many days until spring training?

How to judge Marinelli? From the looks of this team, he's done little with almost nothing. Considering the draft position the Lions have had in recent years the lack of talent talent is incomprehensible. Even when the players where high quality, in the Wayne Fontes era, the team got less than the optimal results from them.
It's defeinitely deeper than the coach. The NFL is the mecca of parity in sports. From 2001 to 2003 the Carolin Panthers went 1-15, 7-9, and 11-5. And the Lions have been the model of ineptness for as long as I can remember as a 27 year old. Perfect example, the Cincinnati Bengals! They've done a 180 within the frame of time the Lions have lingered in losing.
Maybe if Marinelli had that steady, reasonably productive quarterback under center in the Miami Dolphins jersey yesterday. Oh wait, we had him! And the last couple of coaching staffs couldn't get him to play to his potential. Marinelli has so little to work with he's nearly impossible to evaluate.

Thinkingman,
I am just anxious to see how the Sheffield trade turns out. There were a lot of layers to it and so much discussion...

mudhenfan,
Herrington is a great coach and Bob Sutter, his defensive coach since the beginning, is equally as good. Those guys have won with a elite talent and so-so talent. They are just good at what they do - period.

"Jedi,"
The Panthers are the classic example of how quickly a bad team can get good in the NFL. It is incredible it hasn't happened for the Lions.

Pat-
Great post.

The thing that makes the whole Lions situation harder to untangle is the disgusting inconsistency. At first, it looked like the D and the fundementals were there. Then they disappeared, but we got an offense. Now, just about everything is gone.

*sigh*

That Warren DeLaSalle finish was a heartbreaker.

The reason there should be a rematch between OSU and UM is to see who wins on a neutral field.

Tommy,

Good for de la salle despite what happened in the end. What a great season. It's an excellent school with a solid athletic tradition that has been in the shadows of Rice and CC. Good for the Pilots for having their day in the sun. It was well deserved.

Spacecataz,
Great point about the fundamentals. The Lions are anything but fundamentally sound. Also, their defensive scheme seems suspect.
