Signing Casey Fits Perfectly

A lot of people were clamoring for the Tigers to shuffle the deck at first base, but I think they made the right move by re-signing Sean Casey to a one-year contract. The cost (reportedly $4 million) was not outrageous, and Casey provided the Tigers with a lot last season and during the playoffs. He only hit .245, but drove in runs at a 90-plus RBI pace over 162-game schedule. During the postseason, particularly the World Series, Casey was clutch. If you added his playoff numbers to his regular season numbers, it was a more accurate gauge of Casey. He does not strike out a lot and will hit a home run now and then. With Brandon Inge and Carlos Guillen providing good power from the left side of the infield, and the addition of Gary Sheffield, the Tigers should have plenty of power. They ranked third in the American League in home runs last season playing in one of the more spacious ball parks - without Sheffield.

I like the Tigers infield. The World Series aside, Inge has proven to be a solid major league third baseman. Unless he falls off this year, and I do not see that happening, he is not the utility player so many people seem determined to label him. Guillen does make some goofy errors now and then, but he is a better shortstop defensively than he is often given credit for being. Placido Polanco is very good at second base. I like the way the Tigers lineup sets up with Casey in it a lot better than without him.

Random thoughts

- It has become comical the way the Lions keep playing musical chairs at wide receiver. Re-signing Corey Bradford says it all.

- How about Tom Izzo's Spartans beating Texas. The one factor that was very noticeable about that game is how hard Michigan State played on defense. Seems like Izzo's message is getting through to this bunch. If it does, the Spartans may do well in a Big Ten that has changed a lot since last season.

- One player, more than any other, will decide the fate of the Pistons this season: Rasheed Wallace. And he is not playing well. It is no coincidence the Pistons are not, collectively, playing well, either.

Pat,

I was late posting to your Wednesday blog; doing so very early this morning. The past few days I've been listening and reading your views on the game of the century, along with the views of those who enjoy commenting on your views; basically getting pumped for the big game, and coming around to the fact that U-M could indeed go into Columbus, and stun the Buckeyes in the Horseshoe.

I gave them no chance a few weeks ago. But last night, it hit me... the believe that the Wolverines could and will execute in this game, because Michigan pride would prevail. I mentioned this morning that it would be the players who would deliver this victory; "one for Lloyd, and one for Bo, just because."

With the loss of Bo Schembechler this morning, the impact on this showdown is just off the charts now. In a way, this just might be the way he wanted to check out. He did get to address the team last night in an emotional send-off, and he knew his time for cheating death was nearing an end.

There will some tears rolling down the cheeks tommorrow watching this game, but the passion in our hearts, when we yell "GO BLUE!!!" will never be greater. For a game that was set to decide which team would end the season ranked #1 is secondary now. I think foremost in the players minds now, will be playing a game in tribute to Bo; a game that would make him proud to be a maize and blue Michigan hero.

What a sad day in sports Book. Losing Bo is like losing a father. weather you knew him or not. Weather you liked Michigan, MSU or OSU. The guy was a class act who loved the game more then just about anybody especially when you talked to him. I think this will defiantely fire up the wolverines who will now win this game on a high emotion.

I don't think it was a matter of wanting the tigers to shuffle the deck at first. Anybody who wouldn't want Casey back is a nut. The guy could hit and he is a perfect fit at Comerica especially the way he hits the gaps. At the same time someone shot out the Texeria Rumors and everyone got excited. If I had my choice I'd take Texeria too. But at the same time I didn't want to give up Bonderman because I think it would bite us in the rear. Overall I am happy. I'd be even more happier if they allowed Shelton to stick with the club as backup. Casey is injury prone and I think Shelton still can be really good.

As far as the Pistons. Rasheed is Rasheed. I still think FLip is adjusting to using a bench. Once he can get that rotation in rythum I think the Stones will be fine. I do think Maxiell needs to play more and I do think Delfino isn't as good as they thought.

Thinkingman,
I haven't been impressed by the Pistons, either, but it is still very early in the season. They beat Washington easily Friday - and Rasheed was the key with 20 points and 10 rebounds. If he puts up those numbers, they'll be fine. But, granted, that's a big "if,'' at least it seems that way.

Mudhenfan,
This will be a key season for Inge. He must prove that the impressive power numbers he put up last season were not a fluke. The Tigers brass likes him a lot, though. It would not surprise me if he gets a long-term deal past his free agency year at some point.

Garold,
It's always a difficult balance when the subject is the death of someone like Schembechler. Life and death is bigger than football, obviously. But if there is any benefit, you would think it help inspire the Wolverines.

Maddog52,
I agree with you about Bo...I do wonder, if the Pistons falter, how long they will stick with Flip. Sometimes that team plays if it is not listening to him.

Mr. C. I see Joe Crede is a free agent. He was paid 2.75 Mil. His stats look good. I am not trying to replace Inge but if chicago does not sign this guy he may sign for a lot less than 41 MIL To quote someone i heard on the radio, "and the snow hasn't fallen yet. Not sure the difference between, free agent and salary arb. Vinny
