No Excuse for Michigan

So Ball State scored against backup players. So maybe Michigan will be better off in the long run for playing a close game. So it was difficult to give up what would normally be a bye week when rest was needed. The Wolverines still should not have played that close of a game Saturday against a poor Mid-American Conference team. Any other team in the Top 10 would have beaten Ball State by a wide margin. It never should have come down to a fourth-and-goal late in the game. Michigan is fortunate it did not cost them in the polls or with the BCS.

Random Thoughts

- Now I do not feel so bad thinking, on this blog, before the start of training camp that Kevin Jones and Roy Williams are really good players. They sure were Sunday against Atlanta. I have to admit, though, that I am surprised at how well the Lions defense played. It is just not that good on paper, especially with all those defensive linemen out of the lineup.

- If the Colts do not get to the Super Bowl this season it will be utterly pathetic. After downing Denver and New England on the road back-to-back, they are clearly the team to beat. Yet, there is something about that team that dictates it will fall apart during the postseason. It would not surprise me if it happens again.

- The most underrated player on the Lions is defensive lineman Cory Redding. He is solid and seems to be better playing inside than he did at end.

Lets just say that Millen got lucky with Roy WIlliams and KEvin Jones. Personally I have been pretty satisfied with the line play THis unit with a Healthy Verba and Tucker in there. Not a bad unit. Even the unit they through together with out those two the past few games has been very formatable. Funny how things can work out with the right scheme. I hope Mooch takes note on his Prime Time NFL network show at how to run an offense. I wasn't to surprised with the lions defense. I mean you bring back Kennedy, Bryant (for a full game), Alex Lewis ( who in my mind is the lions diamond in the rough) and Lehman. I certainly does help. Now you can keep those guys healthy and in a coupl games bring back a rejuvinated shaun rogers. Not bad. THe lions need to take care of business these next 3 games and have no let downs. To me these next three games will tell you if this is the same old lions or if this team is actually focused on turnign this around. See what I am saying here.

As far as michigan. I couldn't agree more. I maze and blue running through my veins. Give ball state credit. They found a weakness and exploited it. They just kept going over the top. I am surprised they didn't do it more, but that is why they are a 3- 6 MAC team. Michigan better shorten that down because OSU sees that tape michigan will be in a ton of trouble. People say OSU struggled as well. They struggled against Illinois. We struggled against a MAC team. A Bad one at that. THat is a major difference. One thing I did take out of this is. That Michigan to have any chance have to get Manningham back. Overall I don't think there is time to panic at this point. I do think we need to put together a great performance against Indiana and we should be ok. But another horrible squeaker type performance against Indiana. BCS may not be so forgiving. One thing for sure you have to admit this has been a really fun year for college football fans. Who would have thought I'd be really looking forward to watching a Rutgers vs Lousville matchup. Heck I am even pulling for Rutgers. Because what happens then. Rutgers isn't going to the CHampionship game. Which 1 loss team makes it? Flordia has struggled at times. Texas had a couple scary moments this year. USC looked bad a few times. If OSU loses do they automatically get to go? If UofM loses how far will they drop? Got to love this game.

As far as the Colts. I disagree I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't win the superbowl. However, if Bob Sanders can stay on the field for the rest of the season. That Defensive line can sure up. ANd those Linebackers learn how to tackle. I see no reason why they shouldn't be the favorites and couldn't win. You watch film the defense is the key for that squad. Because there is no question the offense will do it's part. I wouldn't count out New England to be honest with you. As bad as they looked they were right there yesterday. I think if these two teams meet again or if Denver were to meet the colts again that the outcome would be different. I think the AFC is definately the power this year and all three teams are awesome.

Maddog52,
Maybe that is true about Williams and Jones. Certainly his record drafting players is not good. I agree about the Ohio State thing. Beating Illinois by a touchdown on the road is more impressive than beating a bad MAC team by a touchdown at home. Illinois has much better players than Ball State and a huge crowd was on their side.

I Rule,
I understand the apathy toward the Lions. And I do feel your pain. But you have to give them credit when it is due. The Lions played one heck of a football game Sunday. Now, will they be able to sustain it? That is the key question. Beating Atlanta will mean little if they don't win at least two of the next three games. I agree they could be setting up everybody for more disappointment.

LOL. Those are all good. Wish I had thought of them myself. Thing is about the 49ers, they have won three games and Miami just crushed the Bears on the road. Oh, and Arizona has more talent than the Lions. The Lions could just as easily lose all three of these games.

Mike K,
I agree with you that English has been the best thing that has happened to Carr and Michigan for a long time. I don't see where the Lions have talent. Kevin Jones and particularly Roy Williams have a chance to be big-time players. Shaun Rogers is talented, but troubled. Other than that, I see the Lions talent as underwhelming.

Pat,

I actually watched a good part of the Lions' game Sunday. I must admit though; I had to turn it off in the 4th quarter. I guess I've just been conditioned for things to fall apart before the final gun. I had envisioned the Falcons chewing them up and spitting them out. Good for the Lions! You'd like to see a guy like Marinelli succeed, but if they start making a habit out of performing like Sunday, we'll have Millen to kick around for another year, or contract extension, for petesake!

I agree with your accessment of Roy Williams and Kevin Jones. Both came up big, and both looked like pros... go figure. Redding looked good, as well as DeVies.

WOLVERINES -

After their showing against Ball State, you really have to worry about U-M getting throttled and embarassed in Columbus. Tell me Carr was just holding back, right?
