Some thoughts on Jhonny Peralta

I don't view shortstop as a weakness for the Tigers. Jhonny Peralta makes the routine play, has driven in more than 80 runs each of the last three seasons, doesn't strike out that much and his three walks Thursday night were a key for the Tigers in their victory at Oakland.
Is he Derek Jeter in his prime? No. Does he have range like Alexei Ramirez? No. But he isn't a problem. He is a solid veteran everyday player in his prime. He's played well for the Tigers to this point. They are a better team with him than without him.
The Tigers have other issues - bullpen depth, concerns about starting pitchers Brad Penny and Rick Porcello and reliance on several apparent 4-A players - that are far, far more pressing.

Yup, Perralta's been solid and dependable when few others have. It reminds me of how long it took fans to warm up to Polanco.
No I am not suggesting Perralta's another Polanco ... but he does quietly get it done with little fan fare.

peralta's rough spring with the bat is a distant memory. have always thought of him as a free swinger, so the walks recently a bit surprising. could see him at second base in the future where limited range a bit less of an issue...if the tigers can find a better option next season at SS. the giants built a world series champ around guys like this...steady vets who gave solid, but unspectacular performance. same could be said of inge, who has quietly accepted hitting #9 in the order much of the season. some vets in his situation would grouse about it publicly.

Pat,

I agree with you 100%. Look what they gave up for him vs. what they gave up for Renteria. Peralta has prob contributed more in 1 game than Renteria did in a whole season.
