Some thoughts on the Tigers after nine games

Anybody who is surprised Ryan Raburn is struggling defensively shouldn't be. He has been an error-making machine regardless the position and level since he signed with the Tigers long ago. He has to hit - really hit - to justify his spot on the field as a regular. He hasn't done that so far this season. Austin Jackson's slump has hurt the Tigers. He had some obvious flaws as a hitter last season, but they have been totally exposed this season. The good thing about Jackson is that he displayed the ability to make adjustments last season. Can he do it again? Andy Dirks is a low-ceiling prospect, but is off to a good beginning at Toledo. He might be able to add something to the Tigers' outfield, especially with Magglio Ordonez slumping. Subpar starting pitching has been hindering the Tigers mightily. The starts by Brad Penny and Rick Porcello have been particularly disturbing. We'll see if Penny does better at home. There is a bottom line about Porcello. His two-seam fastball made him when he won 14 games as a 20-year-old rookie in 2009. It was a nasty pitch that summer, particularly during the second half. It has far less bite these days making him very hittable. The Rangers are off to a fast start and remain formidable. There aren't a lot of breaks in the schedule. Kansas City at home is one of those breaks. The Tigers' failure to take advantage of it is disappointing. Starts like the one today separate the very good from the elite. We'll see what Justin Verlander has in that regard.

Pat, can you please ask Leyland why on earth he is ever having Don Kelly bat 6th? The first time it was ridiculous. Doing it a second time today is just dumb. He's not a good enough hitter to bat 6th at triple A ...

only 1/16th of the season and lamenting the Tigers is like writing off a world-leader in golf double-bogieing the first hole of a major.

But our concerns about the starting pitching and obvious weaknesses are coming to play. And our poor record is occuring with Cabrerra hitting the lights out.

Pat, 90 wins? I dunnow.

The one shinning light is Martinez .. he can flat hit and will help this team a lot.

Michael C,
Agree about Kelly. Seems like Leyland is stubborn about getting reserves involved early in the season. One of his basic thoughts about managing, but in this case, it is a stretch.

Sure. The season isn't over by a longshot, but the start is worth lamenting about. Tigers have been awful. I think Martinez is a very hitter, too.

I have no doubt this team will figure it out - but long season be damned - this is not very good baseball.

I have a list the length of my arm of "why did Leyland do that"s but the execution everywhere is just like the ball game is the second thing on their mind.

They might figure it out - but they are digging a deep hole to climb out of - just like 2008.

I didn't see this coming.

Fred Brill,
You have been proven right - at least as far as early-season crisis is concerned - by the way the Tigers have played last three games. They've been much more solid.

Anonymous,
Nobody "wrote off" the Tigers. But that start wasn't promising. We've seen more than a few seasons slip away after they barely started the last three decades.
