Well you certainly have controversial opinions! :-)
"They need to get a defensive playmaker, though, not just a d-tackle. That's why I think Eric Berry and Derrick Morgan make more sense than Suh or McCoy"
Morgan is projected to go in the the 10-15 range. Safety is the lowest paid position on the defensive side of the ball (only kickers and TEs are paid less). Signing a safety #2 would wreak havoc on our salary cap figure. DTs are 4th highest paid, but not near as high paid as LTs. If we don't trade down we're almost certainly drafting one of the DTs or Okung. If we trade down I think Berry, Okung, or one of the DTs if they drop would be our most likely targets.
"offensive linemen are often found in later rounds. Yet, many fans feel like Lions should take offensive linemen in the first round all the time. And they have - and what kind of offensive line do they have?"
Pat, since 2001 we've only drafted one OT in the first 4 rounds. In 9 years ... That is insane. That's how much Millen neglected the trenches. And we haven't drafted an OT in the top half of the first round since Lomas Brown, 6th overall in 1985. That worked out pretty good, yeah?
While later first round tackles are more of a gamble, high first round OTs are one of the safest positions you can pick. On the other hand high drafted DTs bust even more often than QBs.
Here's an analysis of the top 3 picks in the past 12 years: http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftpicks.php
Only 1 DT and 1 LB have been taken in that span. ZERO defensive backs. Meanwhile, 15 QBs, 6 OTs, 6 DEs, and 5 WRs.
Michael C, I don't know if Morgan is projected that low. If he is taken past the 10th pick, to me that would be quite a bargain for a player of that talent. Any player taken several overall is going to get a big contract. If Lions could trade down, I'd do it. Caputo
