Rogers and Williams need to play

The Tigers have won the world championship twice during my lifetime - in 1968 and 1984. And neither time were they involved in a pennant race. They clinched long before the season ended both years. The real excitement did not really begin until the postseason. Conversely, the Tigers have been in three great pennant races of note over roughly the same period. In 1967, they needed to win at least three out of four games while playing back-to-back doubleheaders against the Angels to close the season. It was to tie the Red Sox for the pennant. They split. The "Impossible Dream" Red Sox won a thrilling three-way race with the Tigers and the Twins. In 1972, a veteran group of Tigers edged out Boston in a close race for the division championship and nearly upset Oakland during the American League Championship Series. It was during my second-year on the Tigers' beat that they rallied down the stretch and beat out Toronto in the final game of the season to win the division. We all remember '68 and '84 so vividly, and don't quite have the same feeling for '67, '72 and '87 even though, overall, those seasons were more thrilling. So - and please forgive my stream of consciousness on this - I do not know if I am quite sure how I feel about the stretch run of the season. On one hand, I remember just how exciting '87 was day-by-day for such an extended period of time. It literally defined the term, "pennant race." On the other hand, I do feel a club can get better prepared for a playoff run if it has time to get ready by clinching early.

Random thoughts

- There is no doubt in my mind the national championship Ohio State most recently won has been stained by what has become of Maurice Clarett. Without him, they do not win the title. And his deportment since leaving speaks volumes about Ohio State as being more of a football factory than an institution of higher learning.

- The charade the Lions insist upon with Charles Rogers and Mike Williams needs to stop. Those two should play more snaps than any of their receivers during the preseason so the Lions can get an accurate evaluation of where they stand. Then, if they do not perform, they can be cut without issue. Burying them on the depth chart does not allow for that accurate of an evaluation.

A fearless prediction: Manny Legace will play better than any Red Wings goalie this coming season. And he will not only lead the Blues to an unexpected playoff berth, but win a series for them.

vinny,
they have lacked starting pitching depth all season, but did ok despite that. when the red sox started to fade is after jason varitek got hurt. oritz and ramirez have that thunder, but in some ways varitek is their most important player. that seems to be proven right now.

Pat,

As this season began, I honesty thought the Tigers would be slighty over .500... between 85-90 wins. I laughed at a few on WXYT, who were predicting around 95 wins, and I remember one who foresaw 100.

It was disappointing to finally lose a series, and those were great games against the Twins, that could have gone either way. It was also disappointing splitting with Tampa Bay. You may be right; they may have trouble maintaining the pace they're on, but I believe this team can achieve success equal to some of the all-time great teams; there's something magical about them most nights. Yeah, the 0-2 to start this last 50 doesn't bode well, but I believe they will bounce back this weekend. I suppose I need to adopt an outlook similar to Leyland's... take them one-at-a-time, while hoping they play competive, and enjoy the ride.

The stretch begins and we'll see what this Tiger team is made of. Yes, the schedule will be tough the next 30 days, with all opponents needing to beat Detroit to contend, with the exception of Cleveland. This six game road trip is their toughest, and they'll need to kick it up a notch. I don't believe going 4-2 is a pipedream. A fever-pitched crowd will await their return in The Copa vs. Texas, and you might have to remind us that there is a football team in town here too, and I'm a suffering Lions' fan; I just don't care right now. Tiger fans better get their tickets now; the excitement is going to get jacked up, as we go through our playoffs warm-up.

Hopefully Verlander will get them back on track tonight in Chicago. It should be a great game.

Pat - respectfully, I couldn't disagree more with your take on Manny Legace. For my full slant, click my name, which will take you to my new hockey blog.

Keep up the good work. No one talks baseball like the Book.

All the same, The Heckler will take a boring, clinch-by-September 10th-no-pennant-race division title!

Sat. Aug.12 Cws 4, Det. 3. Don't take the gas pipe! A win tomorrow will make them 7& 1/2 games in front. The tigs have to get back to good baseball like they played all year. Get rid of the errors. Good God it's hard enough to beat a team as good as CWS, why give it to them. Mr. Rogers great game 4 unearned runs what a a come back and what a shame. His arm is just what the team needed. Vinny.

Geez, am I jinxing our Tigers?!? Let me withdraw my earlier predictions, to change the luck here... in their last 50 they will go 16-34, get swept by the Chisox & Bosox on this road trip, and fail to make the playoffs.

There... make a monkey out of me in reverse now!
