These Tiger Losses Mean Something

The Tigers have lost three of their last five games. That in itself is not much of an issue. Even the best teams go through stretches when they do not win. The Tigers lofty record suggests they are one of those best teams. But it is disturbing the way the Tigers lost those games. They blew a lead and made numerous errors Sunday in a loss at Minnesota that would have completed a series sweep. Jim Leyland, simply put, stuck with Jeremy Bonderman too long. They made four errors Monday night in a loss to Tampa Bay. Then, with Tampa Bay throwing a limited lineup and suspect pitching at them, the Tigers were beaten again Thursday night. The Devil Rays are a bad team. Just splitting four games with them, when the next month, save for six games against Cleveland, presents all contenders, was not good. The Tigers have had some spans of losing games earlier this season. Most notably was going 3-7 over a 10-game period against the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox. The difference was the Tigers were beaten in those games. Three of the past five days, they have beaten themselves. They gave away three games. And it may cost them later when the playoff race really heats up.

Random thoughts

- The weirdest statistic nobody talks about is that Joel Zumaya actually has more blown save opportunities (four) than Todd Jones (three). Zumaya is just one for five in save situations.

- The more I think about his future, the more I would like to see Zumaya start a game or two. I am starting to think that might be his best role. It seems like lately he is overthrowing. Maybe it is to light up the radar gun. He admits he enjoys the thrill his triple-digit readings gives fans. If he were a starter, he would have to pace himself more. It also seems like he muscling the ball too much lately, which was the flaw he displayed early in his professional career. He would have to smooth himself out if he were starting. It is too late to make that change this year with the Tigers in first place. I am talking about next year. It would seem like the Tigers rotation would be really strong with Verlander, Bonderman and Zumaya out front. It would also open the door for trading either Nate Robertson or Mike Maroth in a value-for-value trade.

- I remember when holding the world record in the 100-meter dash meant you were considered "The Worlds Fastest Human." Now the record just raises eyebrows of suspicion about performance enhancing drugs. And that is sad.

I agree Pat. I think limiting Zumaya to 75 innings a year would be a huge waste of his potential. I like the idea he started in the pen and he's getting some good innings (a la Earl Weaver), but long term, I'd like to see him in the rotation. The Red Sox will be facing the same dilema with Papplebon.

daver,
i don't think you or i or anybody else is jumping off the bandwagon here. it goes without saying what the tigers have accomplished in their totality this season. it's just the last five games, the three losses specifically. we haven't seen that from the tigers before this season at all. ideally, you make hay against a bad team like tampa bay and it gives you a little more margin for error against the contenders they have coming up. they still have a cushion, but it's not what it could have been.

brian,
i've kind of changed on that recently. i thought he was made to be a closer. for some reason lately, i'm not so sure. i'm very much interested to hear what others think on this subject.

I think sending Rogers to the pen would be a huge mistake and I don't think Leyland would do it. I'd like to see them go to a modified six man rotation when Maroth comes back. Only use Miner when there's no off day between starts so everyone gets five days rest and use him as a long reliever otherwise.

Pat, who do you think will be the odd man out when Maroth comes back? Roman Colon?

ganon,
your points are well taken, but remember, i updated the blog after they lost three our five games, giving away all three losses. it's not something they can afford to do, but the tigers have more than made up for it with their exciting victories the last couple days.

brian,
I would not take rogers out of the rotation unless it gets really, really bad. he pitched better after a rocky first inning saturday, and is still a savvy veteran. being around leyland, i get the feeling it would take a lot for him to pull a veteran like rogers out of the rotation.

garold,
i think you're right on when it comes to dmitri young. despite his problems, he is an excellent hitter and one of those guys that baseball is in his blood. somehow, those guys always survive and manage to have long productive careers. there is still a lot of good baseball in dmitri young and that's what we've seen lately.

goobered69,

i understand what you are saying, but you could just feel how frustrated bonderman was getting and look how it seemed to carry over to his next start. leyland usually has a better feel for things like that. guess we have to agree to disagree, but that's cool.

thinkingman and others on zumaya,
he does have a good changeup and an above-average breaking ball. it's just that he doesn't throw it often pitching in relatively short relief. i keep having this thought about a rotation of bonderman, zumaya, verlander and miller in the future and thinking that will carry the tigers to extended success. closers tend to come out of nowhere in the minor leagues, or are more available than starters as free agents. i figure you worry about a rotation first and then get a closer.

Pat: Kudos to you for not resting Rogers like I suggested. Kudos to Pug what a exciting ending. Too Much! Vinny
