A couple thoughts about Joaquin Benoit, Bruce Rondon, Quintin Berry and the Detroit Tigers
- All the talk about "The wheels coming off Quintin Berry," is as nonsensical as the hype about him to begin with. He had a bad game against the Yankees. He initial step in the outfield isn't the best, nor are his routes to the ball. There were times when he got to balls dangerously late before, still made the play, and was hailed for making a great play. But his misplay Thursday aside, Berry has tightened up defensively overall and made several good plays since the All Star break, particularly a ninth-inning catch against the White Sox, and getting the ball in quickly to prevent the tying run to score this week vs. the Yankees. Offensively, he will do OK as long as he is spotted against right-handed pitchers, who don't throw particularly hard. I didn't have an issue with Jim Leyland starting him against the Yankees' Hiroki Kuroda. It didn't turn out that way on this particular day, but that's the type of pitcher Berry has a fighting chance against.

At the time the Tigers signed Benoit, he had a career 4.79 ERA (worse than it appears because it'd all been in Texas - that figure was basically league-average). In 2009 he tore his rotator cuff, which is essentially a career-ender. Somehow he came back from that and posted a freakishly good 2010 with the Rays, after which the Tigers signed him up for $15 million.
I hated the sign the day it was made because, with a couple of exceptions, late-inning relievers are a notoriously fickle lot. Benoit was very good in 2011 but this year has unsurprisingly developed a shoulder problem and is giving up home runs at a batting practice rate to where Leyland is clearly having a tough time trusting him in high-leverage situations. Maybe he figures it out and gets it back together, but I would be VERY unsurprised if the real problem is that Benoit has structural damage in his shoulder. If true, he'll be getting $5M to rehab in 2013.
Spencersteel,
I have never known quite what to make of Benoit. When the Tigers signed him, it was off a great year, but his career overall has been spotty. Early this season, he was outstanding. Lately awful. Kind of follows the M.O. of his career. Same last year, excepted halves were flipped. I agree in that their might be a physical issue. Just not throwing the same. But he has bounced back many times. Quality veteran from that standpoint. We'll see.

Pat, I agree with you with Berry and he is a platoon player. One thing that is exciting about the Tigers that is creeping up on us is how well, believe or not, is their top ten prospects. Rondon is exciting, like Verlander, going through minors quite easily.
Nobody necessarily "hyped" Berry. They just liked him alot, he was the new hotness in town, something we hadnt seen before with the speed.
You make good points here but honestly you overreacted just as much as the fans did saying things like "ohhhh the fans want a statue out there of him, right next to greenberg". I mean cmon, no one said that Pat. You tend to do that to prove a point when all you need is simple facts, I think thats why people come down on you alot.
You have the facts in front of you, just tell it like it is.
