Why I think the Tigers trade is risky
It may pan out in the end. But make no mistake about it - it was costly.
Francisco Martinez is the best position prospect in the Tigers'organization. There is risk he will comeback and haunt the Tigers to a big degree in the future.
That he is performing as well as he is as a 20-year-old in the Double-A Eastern League is an indication of a high ceiling.

So he hurts the Tigers 10 times a year, beginning 3 years from now. If the Tigers do well in the postseason this year (not to mention the probability of an improved rotation for years to come) I'll take it. I bet the Tigers are REALLY lamenting the loss of Gorkys Hernandez and Cameron Maybin.
I'm disappointed in giving up Charlie, but you have to give something to get something. Do you think this Martinez kid could have been the answer next year at third Book?
The thing about prospects is that until they make in in the majors, they are just prospects. Most of these guys never pan out. Miller, Maybin, Hernandez, etc. Not doing so much these days.
Besides, the Indians landed Jimenez, so Dombrowksi had to do something big to keep up.
Pat, Martinez errors at 3B were starting to mound so he might have to be move. I didn't like Furbush being traded because I think he will be effective in MLB if he gets a little more control.
Baseball America says, about Martinez: "he projects as a solid regular at third base who receives average grades from scouts across the board." "his strongest tool is his plus speed."
the Tigers have gone 1-9 in the last 10 starts by the #5 guy. not much pressure on Fister to improve on that track record. if he can lead the team to 4-5 victories in the roughly 10 starts he has left, he will be a big boost to their playoff chances.
a bit surprised that the Tigers did not get a vet with playoff experience for the pen. suppose it could still happen before roster expansion.
Jake,
Yeah, I hear you on going for it. But Tigers did take a risk, albeit a calculated one.

Mickey,'
Middle of next season Martinez might be up. I don't think they gave up that much in Furbush. We'll see.

Anonymous,
But the flipside is actually the Indians. They became a contending team with prospects from trades that panned out.
Caputo
Barry,
No question Martinez has a long way to go with the glove.
Caputo
Woody,
How many solid major league every day regular third basemen are there. Often a trouble spot. They don't grow on trees.
