Tigers need to deal for pitching above all else at trade deadline

Second base, as much anguish as it has caused Tigers' fans this season, is not the club's primary need as the trade deadline approaches.
It is pitching. It is starting and relief.
I see getting a solid right-handed reliever for the bullpen as a priority. Do you trust Ryan Perry? Phil Coke should definitely be a plus in the bullpen.
I feel the Tigers may need another starter. We'll see what Charles Furbush does on Monday, but Rick Porcello and Brad Penny have been shaky. Also, it is a question whether Max Scherzer is an authentic No. 2 starter behind Justin Verlander.
The Astros could be willing trade partners. Wandy Rodriguez is signed long-term, but expensive. Brett Myers has a contract through 2012 - and is signed for 2013.
One thing about second base, there are players at that position who could be available. I still think the best fit for the Tigers among them is San Diego's Orlando Hudson. He has hit .282 since coming off the disabled list in June. Mark Ellis is off the market. He was traded to Colorado.

Well Book, I don't disagree but I do so grudgingly. 2nd and 3rd are glaring holes. Scherzer started hot and can get it back - he was challenging Tiger Fans opinions about being the Ace before Verlander just started this unbelievable streak - and I thought Coke was moved back to the pen a day or two ago. Pitching does beat hitting - but defense and 3rd need to shore up where pitching falls short. Tough decisions eh? Happy 4th to all you 'mericans' - enjoy the holiday!

Pat, I totally agree. I am still little sore at the Tigers for passing up on Halladay. All they wanted was Porcello and Crosby. Sure these guys are or will be 3 or 4 guys in your rotation, but Halladay is an ace. Are there any aces out there?

Definitely agree, Pat.

You know, it's actually hard to believe this team is leading the Division with it's weaknesses, starting pitching, middle relief, defense (especially with Rayburn in there), lack of speed, and yes, offense, despite what you read into the stats. Although, Cabrerra and Martinez are awesome back-to-back hitters.

I would somewhat question that this team with no changes can win the pennant .. can maybe get to 86-87 wins but that leaves them open to Chisox (and the long shots, Indians or Minny) beating them.

Fred Brill,
Good point about the fielding. The Tigers' defense has been OK this season. Boesch has made some strides in the OF. Is hurt when Mags is in there. But Peralta has done well at short. Still, Tigers not above average defensively.

Barry,
That offer never was real. It was talked about a lot, but never real. Halladay is a great one, though.

Anonymous,
Yeah, I do wonder what, say, 87 wins would get a team in the AL Central. Would it win the division. Just might.
