On the AL elite, the best prospect in baseball few have discussed and somebody worse than Dombrowski

The current standings don't necessarily suggest so, but is there any American League club that can legitimately threaten the Red Sox or Yankees in the postseason?
Just don't see it. Texas would have the next best chance - I guess.
Then maybe the Tigers - because Justin Verlander might be an important factor in a short series.

- With all the hype about Bryce Harper, the best prospect in baseball just might be Mike Trout, a 19-year-old outfielder who was called up by Angels. Trout doesn't have Harper's power potential, which is enormous, but he will hit with good power in due time. His modus operandi is he can fly. He has exceptional speed. Not too many players with legitimate plus tools across the board. Trout is one of them. Will be interesting to see, even at his young age, whether he have bearing on the pennant race. Special talent.

- Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has, justifiably, received his share of criticism for bad contracts, but White Sox general manager Ken Williams has been worse.
He traded for Alex Rios and Jake Peavy for past pennant drives, taking on their huge contracts in the process, and signed Adam Dunn as a free agent.
Rios is making $12 million each this season and next, and $12.5 million in both 2013 and 2014. He is hitting .214 with six home runs and 20 RBI.
Peavy is being paid $16 million this season and $17 million in 2012. He is 4-2 with a 4.63 ERA. Dunn, who signed a four-year, $56 million free agent contract in the off season, is hitting .163 with eight home runs and 32 RBI. He has struck out 113 times in 257 at bats.
Dunn hit fourth and Rios fifth for the White Sox Thursday against the Twins. They lost and continue to sputter below .500. The reasons why are obvious.

I am a tigers fan living in Chicago and I'm glad you brought this up. It's easy to rip Dombrowski when it comes to investing money in players who are not producing (Rayburn, Inge, Guillen, Willis etc), but I think the reality is that if you looked around the majors you'd see that most teams (not quite to the extent of the White Sox) have under-performing players who are making too much money. Having grown up in the Cecil Fielder and then Randy Smith eras of Tigers baseball I am happy to have Dombrowski and Leyland in charge and at least be in the pennant race almost every year.

The Red Sox have John Lackey signed for the next 3.5 years at a contract of $17 million/yr. He looks absolutely terrible and they can't move him.

Scott Sizemore is knocking the cover off the ball in Oakland.

It's coming up on 2 months since Dombrowski traded him, and his production is holding up, if not improving.

This is a bad miss, if we let a good infielder get away.

Andy Brandt,
There is no doubt Dombrowski has made his share of mistakes, especially with big contracts. But he's also had some hits. Ultimately, he has to get the Tigers back into the postseason. Makes it a very important season for both DD and Leyland, to say the least.

Chief,
One thing about the Red Sox and Yankees is they can absorb such contract messes easier than Tigers because their local broadcast revenue money is so huge.

Anonymous,
He is not "knocking the cover off the ball." He's had a few hits over a short period of time for a team that is out of the pennant race. When the heat was on in Detroit, he just didn't get it done. Also, Purcy has pitched some important relief innings for the Tigers, particularly in June when it was badly needed. His numbers are bad because of two horrible outings, but otherwise he has been OK. Jury long from in on that trade.

Just wondering if anyone talks to each other at 97.1 Apparently Ken Williams is the best GM in the AL Central according to the morning show guys today. They seem to have forgotten nearly everyone Ken Williams has traded for has been a dud.

Book,

Knocking the cover off the ball or whatever you want to call it, Sizemore's waaaaay outperforming what the Tigers have gotten out of their second and third basemen.

And you are really reaching on the Purcy thing. This guy is nothing to speak of at all. Anybody in the minors could be doing what he's done.

I agree tht 2 months isn't long enough to judge a trade... unless it's in a pennant race and any single game during that 2 months might be the difference in winning the division or losing it.

Let's not be Dombrowski apologists. As of right now, he blew it on that trade. The Tigers are hurting badly at the EXACT positions Sizemore might have helped them.

And Oakland has exposed a Tigers miss, in terms of moving Sizemore to third. But that would have exposed Dombrowski's other big faux pas... signing Inge to that foolish contract. He didn't want to risk putting Sizemore at third and having him succeed, and expose that mistake. So he traded him.

No pennant this year and Dombrowski can be let go. That's a given.

Sizemore hit 0.224 in 2010, 0.222 for the Tigers in 2011. For a no-field 2nd baseman, that just doesn't cut it. If hitting 0.220 is enough to run Inge and Rayburn out of town, what is the big deal with trading away Sizemore?

Because in Oakland, for 2 months now, Sizemore has been knocking the cover off the ball, and at 3rd base, meaning Sizemore is WELL outplaying current Tigers at TWO different positions.
