I stood on the 18th tee with Nicklaus, Trevino and Player as Nicklaus was ready to clinch the championship. Chi Chi Rodriguez was in the 18th bunker. He sunk it as the crowd roared. Nicklaus was upset (not going to explain). Not only did he have to par the 470 yd par 4 hard 18th but have to come back the next day to play an 18 hole playoff.
Well, Nicklaus pared the hole and came back to set an Oakland Hills record with a 64 vs. Chi Chi's 72.
