I was wondering about Cabrera's weight, too. Obviously, there's a fine line here where you become too personal and risk ignorance (who really knows about an individual's personal physiology?), but I was surprised when I saw him on the ESPN game a few days ago. He looked borderline fat. Assuming that he is in sub-prime shape, that might be manageable right now because he's still young. But he's setting a bad precedent, and by the time he's 30 or 32, he's probably not going to be able to compensate for all that extra fat with raw talent, and the Tigers will have the ol' contractual albatross to deal with.
BTW, is Dombrowski's job on the line if the Tigers don't contend this year?
Another if in my mind is "If Ordonez ankle is really healed" - that is a hard injury to recover fully from.
I think the second base battle is really to see who stays up after Guillen gets hurt. I know that sounds cynical - I don't mean it to be.
I am rooting for Rhymes - I like him a lot. He has that Brandon Inge quality in that he will drive sports radio announcers and columnists nuts because we (the fans) will all think he is better than he is.
The Tigers could quietly shop Cabrera, and I bet they'd find takers.
I agree that he's a Hall of Fame type player, and those are rare. But if he stays out of trouble and gets his numbers up, and the Tigers are sitting there out of contention late season, I could see them taking a huge deal for him, or even a pretty good one, especially if they smelled trouble down the line.
Guillen could play first for now. They'd miss that big bat, but like I say, if they smell trouble it could be smart to deal him and head trouble off.
Anonymous, I don't see any scenario Cabrera would be traded. The Tigers would need equal for him in return - just don't see where they would get it. Also, his salary is huge. Not many teams would pick it up when there are conduct issues. Also, Guillen was a disaster defensively when they moved him to first in '08. Caputo
David Brennan, The think about Cabrera I've noticed is that he doesn't look as heavy in uniform up close at the game than he does on TV. And he was in good shape last season and the year before. He does work very at the field. I've seen that often when I arrive at the park early. I've seen him on the field a couple times as early 2 p.m. working on hitting or taking extra grounders. Caputo
Fred Brill, They say Magglio has a hamstring issue. He is in really good shape physically. Wonder if that will make a difference in the field where his range has been waning. Caputo

And we could use another Inge.
Oh, I make myself laugh.
Book,

It's all on him, I guess.
