Talk About a Toss Up

Funny how it works, eh? I certainly fell under the category of thinking the Yankees were a much more difficult foe for the Tigers in the playoffs than Oakland. In retrospect, I could not have been more wrong. The Athletics are one of the hottest teams in baseball. Often that is the deciding issue during the postseason. The Yankees looked brutal against the Tigers. But I believe that had more to do with the Tigers pitching than anything else. When the Yankees offense was shutdown, they had little else to turn to. Their pitching is not good. I was shocked how poorly they played defensively. I think Jim Leyland would be wise to set up his rotation with Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers and Jeremy Bonderman start the first three games. I can see Nate Robertson having his biggest impact during the American League Championship Series working out of the bullpen. I see this series going the distance. And I have no idea which team will win.

Random thoughts

- This could be the season that finally ends the Matt Millen era in Detroit. It is almost as if the Lions are destined to win only two or three games this season. If they do not beat Buffalo at home this Sunday, watch out. Especially hurtful to Millen will be if Matt Leinart takes off in Arizona. His first start Sunday against Kansas City Sunday was a really good one. Despite a loss, he rallied his team and performed better than Joey Harrington did at anytime during his four seasons with the Lions. The Lions just might have passed on the great QB they have so desperately needed for nearly five decades.

- Michigan moving up to No. 4 in the AP poll is deserved. Seems like the Wolverines are on a collision course with Ohio State that might result in a truly epic regular season finale.

- I have to admit, there have been times when I have desperately missed Tiger Stadium. But Comerica Park is really starting to grow on me. I think moving the bullpen from right field to left field has made a huge difference. Oh, and so has a winning team.

Good morning Pat,
wow, so much to say, where to start...
Go Blue, we appreciate your help in our fire John L campaign.
Lions, wow, I haven't seen someone blow a game like that since... oh wait... i'm a state fan, nevermind
Tigers, the atmosphere at Comerica was everything it should have been. just incredible, goose bumps. the celebration was fantastic. the complete dismantling of the yanks was beautiful.
But now comes the real series Book. No more 8 run games, no more yankees, no more superstar lineups, this is the series for the real baseball fanatics. Rogers, bondo, verlander, robertson, vs zito harden haren blanton (hopefully, not sure how A's rotation will play out), now that is baseball! no more blowouts, these will be nailbiters, I can't wait. And I agree, coinflip, we are going to have to pitch lockdown ball, because this is the opposite of the yanks. games 3,4,5 in detoit, wow! I have to think if we can shutdown the yanks, we can shutdown the A's but i'm worried about our pitchers keeping up their intensity

Mr.C. Vinny wrong again (yankees in 3) Had a lot of company. Tigers great pitching again. Mr. Rogers game was so uplifting and may have helped Bonderman. It made me feel great to see them beat the Yanks and their large payroll. I should pick Oakland in four and the tigs will win. Millen-- The owners of the Lions would do better by throwing darts at a list of names to run the club. Is Oaklands stadium as you guys say a band box? Vinny

funny how things work is right. I will be honest for anybody to say they weren't nervous about bonderman taking the mound is insane. I was really happy for that guy. Sometimes it takes a moment like that to propel a guy to the next level of where he needs to be. What him and Rogers did was unreal and what makes the playoffs spectacular. I really love our chances against Oakland.

It made me sick all weekend long how people talked about the Yankees and there powerful lineup. Well you know what the Tigers pitching has been the best all year. The numbers prove it. Oakland has a good staff, but i think our pitching is better then there hitting, and our hitting can match there pitching. As long as we play smart, show paitence, and do the little things to win like we did against the Yankees. I honestly like our chances to go all the way. Nobody in the national league scares me at all.

Michigan looks awesome. Michigan State is a real joke. I feel really bad for the players, because I hate to say it the coaches make more mistakes then they do. I think MSU needs to gritty guy in there. A smash mouth football type attitude. They don't have that.

The lions what can you say. WHat happen yesterday doesn't surprise me. I hate to say this, but what a blonder by Millen. OK facts re facts. THis was a rebuilding year (AGAIN). We got Kitna. We should have drafted Leinart. We had the potential to have a Kitna/Palmer situation. There is a reason that worked out like it did. Kitna is like a pacer type QB. He is not the main guy. Our offensive line is awful. Our secondary is pathetic and weak. Millen did absolutely nothing to fix it. They preached all summer about winning in the trenches. Hard to win there when your trenches are made with marshmellows. Bacus I am sorry should be moved to guard or right tackle. He is not an NFL left tackle. THe Colts didn't want Demulling so the lions had to have him. Verba and Tucker were both washed up and nobody in the league wanted them so the lions had to have them. Jonathan Scott in my mind played pretty good and he was benched. Edwards was a must sign and he was pathetic. He is not even starting. If he was that important why isn't he starting. This has been an utter embarassment with Millen at the Helm. Fords don't care otherwise they would have done something. So you know what shame on us fans for continuing to buy those tickets. I can see why Mike WIlliams doesn't play. He looked like a lazy (ass) out on the field sunday. stop complaining about your time. Because when you get the chance he doesn't make the most of it. Personally I think the Lions have a bunch of (whimps) on their team. Seems like they are always hurt. Sometimes i wonder if they go down because htye are embarrased to play any more.

just a sad situation. I am glad the tigers are going to be good for a while because it bolds bad for the lions. Because you know what people aren't going to care about them anymore.

Pat,

I haven't listened to much talk radio since Saturday night, but you bring up a topic that I brought up today with a friend over lunch - why not start off the series with Justin Verlander, followed by Kenny Rogers? Doesn't that set the Tigers up for the rest of the series?

I'm sorry, but after Barry Zito, I don't see any other quality in their rotation, that the Tigers can't handle! Robertson does get lit up a bit out at McAfee Colosseum, so save him for The Copa, or as you suggest, out of the bullpen. If Leyland wants him to make a start this series, hold off until Game 3.

Zito is going to be tough enough, and I definately agree that Verlander is our best option for Game 1. I like the Tigers in 5, unless Zito wins the first one, and then I'll say Tigers in 6.

Nick P,

Well, it does seem as if the handwriting is on the wall for John L. He needed a good performance against U-M. He didn't get it. On the Lions, it's one thing to lose, it another to hold a lead and get beaten by defensive touchdowns. Yuck!
I am in Oakland now and just got back from the Athletics' clubhouse. They are relaxed and loose. They are way different than the Yankees that way. It is an interesting contrast.

Vinny,
You're right about having a lot of company. It reminded me of the Pistons-Lakers series when afterward all these people came out of the closet saying they knew the Pistons were going to do it. Please. The Tigers did a great job, but it would have been impossible, given the circumstances leading up to it, to come to a reasonable conclusion the Tigers would turn it around like that.

I Rule,
You make a great point about Bonderman and power pitchers. One difference is he started earlier in the big leagues. Clemens and Unit were college kids, and the others took longer. He will be eligible for free agency at a really young age, so the Tigers will have to make a decision early on him. It's the downside to keeping him in the major leagues during 2003.

Maddog52,
At some point, this has got to cost Millen his job. It just keeps getting worse and there is no hope whatsoever for a turnaround. The Tigers have taken the attention away from the Lions disaster, but it is still a mess for all the reasons you stated - and more.

Thinkingman,
I am not sure the Tigers have the better lineup. The Athletics have more consistency up and down their order, it seems to me. I have a feeling this is going to be a really good series, one baseball purists will really enjoy.

Garold,
I definitely give the Tigers an edge in the starting rotation. But not Nate Robertson. That's why I am puzzled Leyland is going with him in Game 1. It does not make sense to me.

Maybe you're right about Robertson. Leyland certainly has had a good feel for what he is doing this season. Just because I don't see the logic in it doesn't mean it isn't right.

Pat,

So Leyland has set his rotation to mimick the Yankee series. Yes, it doesn't makes sense, when Nate has given up 12 runs in 13 innings this season out there, (or vice-versa) and Rogers is 2-0 and lights out in Oakland. Another thing - the A's hit worse against right handers at home, so against their best pitcher, you'd think he'd go with Verlander. Is it possible he is obsessed with going against the grain, and get career starts out of EVERY starter???

I almost feel out-of-line with any second guessing here, because it seems these guys would run through a brick wall for him. I'm just going to shut up and enjoy it. I do disagree with you in the lineup comparison area; I think Detroit is MUCH better overall!

During the season, the A's fielded better than us, but NOT during the playoffs. Clearly, we have the better pitching and better hitting. I can't see how the A's are going to take the Tigers to a 7th game. I know the stats are just paperwork at this point, but we have the better manager as well.

These guts are playing their hearts out for him now! Man, if they can steal Game 1 from Zito with Robertson, you might as well address him in the future as "The Legend!" The Tigers gave the fans something to celebrate about last Saturday, but we still want a title to celebrate... maybe this weekend.

Warrenmott72,
Yeah, remember it well. Jim Hawkins had a great column about it today in the print edition of The Oakland Press. The Tigers almost beat them, The ALCS went two games in Oakland and three in Detroit at the time. Oakland won their home games and the Tigers won the first two back in Detroit. Reggie Jackson got hurt sliding into home plate and missed the World Series. Great stuff - and too often forgotten. I can still envision the rage on Campy's face when he threw that bat.

I don't know if that is the right decision, either, and wrote my column for Tuesday's paper about it.

Mr.C.-- Remember what Sparky said about Geo. Brett "i'm not going to let him beat us." It may be Leyland should take the same attitude with Mr. Thomas. I hate to say this as Mr. Leyland sure seems to know just what he is doing. Just a thought, i meant to say in an earlier blog. Vinny

Vinny,
I agree with you about Leyland. He is a great manager and a major reason the Tigers have advanced this far this quickly. I do think, however, Verlander should be starting tonight. But who knows? Leyland seems to have a real good idea about what he is doing.

To be honest with you, I don't have a real good feel for how this series is going to play out. Both teams haven't been this far in the playoffs for a long time and both were impressive in the first round. Oakland is probably getting a little more respect nationally because it closed the season stronger than the Tigers, and because FrankThomas has been so hot. To me, it is a "pick 'em'' series.
