Galarraga Performance Could Be Turning Point For Tigers
I know the Indians are not a good team. I understand their bullpen has just fallen apart of late - and the Tigers should be beating on them like a drum.
But other than a couple poorly played fielding attempts, the Tigers looked like an energized ball club Thursday.
What happened Wednesday night, with the pitching performance of the ages by Armando Galarraga, must be the reason why.
The Tigers had lost eight of their previous 10 games, including four of five at home to Cleveland and Oakland - both bad teams. They were in danger of falling back to .500 and dropping a considerable distance behind the Twins.
Now they look like contenders again. They were at a fork in the road in their season. It appears the Tigers have taken the correct path.

Oakland has the same win% as the Tigers. Guess you think the Tigers are a bad team?
Pat, I couldn't agree any more. The team chemistry in the dugout looked amazing. This really could be the sort of thing that brings together the team.
Remember in '06 when the rotation was inseparable? You always saw them hanging out together in the dugout, often with their mouths filled with Big League Chew. Now that Willis is gone and Armando & Max seem to have figured things out, the team should have better feel for what they're gonna get from their starters each game.
The one concern I have is with Porcello. His WHIP is 1.67 and his Ks/9 innings is a low 4.15. I don't know enough about pitching to say what his problem is, but hopefully its mechanical because we've seen what some tweaking can do (Scherzer).
I'm still scared about Minnesota, though. At the end of the day, they are still a better team than the Tigers, but the margin seems a lot smaller now than it did a few days ago.
Anything less than 2 of 3 from KC this weekend would be a monumental disappointment.

Oakland has an 11-17 road record, the Tigers a 17-10 home record. The numbers are are 8-16 and 16-7 besides that series. You'd expect the Tigers to win that set.

One thing I've liked about Porcello is that he has at least battled through not having his best stuff. Even the other day, he had a quality start (errors cost him). I'd be surprised if he doesn't turned it around and do well remainder of the season.
