If anything, it was Jered Weaver who disrepected baseball

The unwritten codes of baseball are usually excuses to get mad at somebody else about one's own lack of performance.
I'm not talking about flatout taunting, but things like staring at a home run for too long.
There was a classic example of it Sunday at Comerica Park when the Angels' Jered Weaver blew his stack and went baseball's version of postal by sailing a 92 mph fastball at Detroit's Alex Avila's head and stomping around like a 2-year-old at feeding time.
First of all, if Weaver had a problem with Carlos Guillen for admiring his home run too long, fight him. He was right in front of Weaver. Go after him, ala David Ortiz.
It was would have been Weaver II in Tigers' lore. Remember Weaver I - when his brother, Jeff, got mouthy and Mike Sweeney of the Royals charged him. His act was such a reminder of his brother's often bush league behavior when he played for the Tigers it was surreal.
This stuff where Weaver throws his mitt in the safety of the dugout and acts "like hold me back" when he is protected is totally chicken, well, you-know-what.
Don't scream and stomp. Duke it out with Guillen.
Secondly, he wasn't trying to hit Avila. That much was apparent. Obviously, Weaver has excellent control. But throwing near the head, in case he misses, could have resulted in dire consequences.
And then to talk about respect for the game afterward?
Weaver couldn't have dissed it any more.

Its tough get past your "insane" genes. That guy runs his mouth the entire game. He hollared at Ordonez to run faster. He hollared at Cabrera. He hollared at Ordonez again when he flew out (You could see him mouth something like 'blah blah Mo.. F...' on TV). It was awesome what Guillen did. He got into his head nicely.

Was at the game yesterday and it sure was an entertaining one.

Well, Guillen certainly gets thrown at the next time the Tigers play the Angels. Also I saw Aybar said that Verlander told him on the field that he would get him back next time for the bunt attempt to break up the no-hitter (which didn't) so I guess Verlander will throw at Aybar when the time is right.

This has the makings of a Red Wings/Avalanche rivalry.

Amen! I read another blog earlier that called Carlos Guillen "classless".

Classless Weaver chirped at the Tigers almost from the beginning of the game.

Classless Weaver then didn't even bother to consider that Magglio wasn't showing him up, he was just watching the ball to see if it went fair. Classless Weaver jumped to conclusions.

Classless Weaver then barked at Cabrerra about the "incident".

What did Carlos do? He did what a lot of people do when addressing a pouty childish temper tantrum: He gave him something to really cry about.

Classless Weaver then threw at Avila, head high.

Jared Weaver is a punk, and a cry baby who cannot control himself. I doubt this will be the last incident in his career in which he displays this behavior.

BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed what Carlos did, and I would imagine his teammates did also.

the pressure's getting dialed up on these teams in contention. some guys will meltdown. saw it with Penny last week, now Weaver.

i do fault guillen. the ball he hit was a no doubter. he's veteran enough to know to put his head down and touch em all. turning and facing weaver as he began his homerun trot did incite the situation.

as a former C, scoiscia should have known enough to visit the mound, at least, to try to settle weaver down in a game that was still close. where was he when the homeplate ump is talking to weaver? it's part of his job to protect his players from doing something idiotic.

weaver and scoiscia should be suspended. throwing near a guy's head immediately after being warned...utter bs. retaliation is expected but not in that way.

Million dollar arm, 10 cent brain, much like nitwit brother that used to pitch for us. You're right, Pat, why did Weaver have to be "restrained" by his team mates from going after Tigers players, when they were right there in front of him the whole game?

Weaver is a punk who does not respect the game or himself. When he flaps his pie hole at batters and baserunners, as he was doing yesterday, he is showing them up and inviting retaliation. He dishes it out, but he can't take it. He should be suspended for throwing at Avila and I expect he'll whine about it.

Great game.

This was flat good old time baseball.

Didn't like the pitch near the head, though. Pitches like that can cost a young guy a career.

Avila should have charged the mound and pounded that wacko.

Now that would have fit right into this game.

By the way, where was Scioscia when the ump went out and tried to settle down and warn Weaver? Am I missing that LAA coaches had already visited once? He might as well have told Weaver to throw at Avila.

Gosh, LAA is in a pennant race.

Pat, Carlos , reacting to Weaver's over reaction to Magglio waiting to see if his drive down the line was fair or foul, almost resulted in Avila getting beaned. Both were wrong. Weaver is an immature hothead, like his brother. If , given the chance I'd probably flip him the bird, myself! Dave

Dan Joseph,
Supposedly that was out of character for Jered Weaver. It wasn't for Jeff Weaver.

Core Contrarian,
Don't know if it was match Wings-Avs, but it definitely will be interesting if the Tigers meet Angels in postseason.

Karen,
I agree with you here. Guillen didn't start it. Weaver did.

Woody,
Think you make a fair point. And Weaver throwing at Avila accomplished nothing other than delaying a start and his manager missing from a game.

treetownart,
Weaver wasn't interested in fighting, just stomping around like he was. Just a big show - and for what?

Anonymous,
Weaver threw inside and high, but didn't really knock Avila down. I think that's why Avila didn't react more emotionally than he did.

Dave,
I hear you, but I didn't see where Guillen was out of line.
