Whenever I hear Lawrence Taylor is in hot water, I am curious. Why is he so troubled? He should have it made.
In my opinion, Taylor was the greatest football player I've ever seen - offense or defense.
I remember seeing him play against the Lions at the Silverdome. He returned an interception nearly 100 yards for a touchdown, pulling away from the Lions backs and receivers in the process. It was before the Giants were good really good. They only beat the Lions 13-6 that day. And it was simply because Taylor was so disruptive.
The man is accused of raping a teenager. 'Knucklehead' might be a tad on the trite side as a descriptor, don't you think?

ReplyDeleteI remember that game also, it was the turning point of the Giants franchise. Taylor was great but I think he was somewhat overhyped by the NY media machine. I always thought Joe Greene was the most disruptive defensive player. He was the only guy that I ever saw that could knowck the ball out of the center's hand when hiked before it got to the Quarterback, because Greene was double and triple teamed so much it enabled the other Steelers to play with reckless abandon. As for Taylor, substance abuse and an inability to grow up. It makes you wonder about Roethlisberger, eh?

ReplyDeleteGreene was a great player, as well. Drafting him set the Steelers off. Tough to go wrong with either as players, but obviously Greene, who went on to become a long time NFL coach, had better qualities as a person.

ReplyDeleteI really don't think anyone ever cared about LT as a person. All they saw was he could win games, and ultimately trophys. The other stuff was excusable until it interferred.
Once the cleats were hung up - LT lost his purpose and usefulness to those people around him. He became a sideshow.
Sad thing is many of these guys are like that, and we are too. Do we REALLY care what they do once the cleats are hung up?

ReplyDeleteIt is totally that way. One of things I don't like about sports. However, the other side of it is that athletes like LT get these huge edges to the rest of their lives they often waste.
